First of all, let’s recall what happened before the Patriots repeat their Super Bowl win in 2005. The Patriots head coach Bill Belichick reached former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson for advice on repeating victory after the Super Bowl XXXVIII win. What Belichick was told was that he should first manage higher expectations, including fans’ expectation on the team to win again and players’ expectation to be stars with better contracts.
Indeed, what the Saints are facing now indeed is what Johnson described more than ten years ago. As the team is trying to keep their key players with new contracts, some other players are staying away from team activities while their agents are negotiating with the team for better contracts. Helping the team win a Super Bowl game has made the players feel better with themselves and want more valuable contracts before wearing back their Saints jerseys.
While the Saints are dealing with all these post-victory problems, their opponent teams are working harder in preparation for new season. The Falcons, Buccaneers and the Panthers are not necessarily doomed to lose each game against the Saints as they are improving any way, while losing any game to each of the three teams would mean moving backward of the Saints and will cause early frustration that may keep the team even further away from the Super Bowl.
